In July 2021, Flughafen Wien AG recorded the highest number of passengers since the beginning of the corona pandemic. Austria's largest airport had 1,5 million passengers. In direct comparison with the same month of the previous year, it tripled, but 53,4 percent less than in the record year 2019.

“July was the month with the highest number of passengers since the beginning of the pandemic: With 1,5 million passengers, we recorded almost three times as many passengers as in July of the previous year, and this positive trend continues even more strongly in the first half of August. That gives us hope for the summer and the months to come. People are traveling more again and the new flight connections from Air Canada, Eva Air, Etihad Airways and many other carriers prove this. Nevertheless, we are still a long way from the figures from before the pandemic and the next few months will remain challenging. From today's perspective, we expect around 2021-12 million passengers in the Flughafen Wien Group in 13 as a whole, ”says Julian Jäger, CEO of Flughafen Wien AG.

In the holiday month of July 2021, the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) recorded the highest number of passengers since the beginning of the pandemic with 1.817.202 travelers. Compared to the pre-crisis level (July 2019), however, the decline is still 55,2 percent.

At the Vienna Airport location, the number of passengers in July 2021 almost tripled compared to the crisis month of July 2020 - from 567.370 to 1.474.634 travelers. Nevertheless, the number of passengers is still 53,4 percent below the pre-crisis level (July 2019).

The number of local passengers in Vienna fell by 53,2 percent compared to the pre-crisis level (July 2019), the number of transfer passengers fell by 53,5 percent. Aircraft movements recorded a minus of 2021 percent in July 46,1. Air freight, on the other hand, is picking up again: In July 2021, the freight volume at the Vienna location was 22.444 tons, only 3,9 percent below the pre-crisis level (July 2019).

The number of passengers at Vienna Airport to Western Europe fell in July 2021 by 49,3 percent compared to the pre-crisis level (July 2019), and to Eastern Europe by 42,7 percent. At the Vienna location, the number of passengers fell by 61,4 percent to 1.966.593 travelers compared to the previous year. The number of flight movements fell from January to June 2021 by 44,5 percent to 29.455 take-offs and landings. The average load factor (seat load factor) fell from 63,9 percent to 52,8 percent. The freight volume, on the other hand, recorded an increase of 16,1 percent to 125.150 tons (air freight and trucking). Malta Airport recorded a decrease in passengers of 1 percent to 2021 travelers in H60,3 / 403.812 and Kosice Airport recorded a decrease of 54,0 percent to 23.226 travelers in the same period compared to the previous year.

“Fortunately, Austrians who are increasingly fond of traveling are enjoying their summer vacation again. However, in order to avoid new travel restrictions in autumn, the incentives to vaccinate should be significantly increased by clearly differentiating them from those who have not been vaccinated. In any case, a renewed lockdown of the majority of vaccinated people would not be reasonable and would also stifle the hope of improvement in travel, ”said Günther Ofner, CEO of Flughafen Wien AG. “Thanks to tough cost-saving measures and short-time working, we will again achieve a slightly positive result for the full year 2021 despite the previous decline in traffic and reduce our net debt again”.

Vienna expects an operating result of four million euros

Although the around 2021 to 12 million passengers (of which around 13 million at Vienna Airport) now expected in the FWAG Group for the full year 10 are below the originally budgeted values due to the pandemic, the positive result for the period of around € 4 million that has been guessed so far will be. for 2021 also confirmed under these conditions. This is due on the one hand to significant cost savings such as lower expenses for incentives, lower maintenance expenses and reduced personnel costs, on the other hand to higher public subsidies through the extension of short-time working until the end of the year and additional income from real estate transactions. Sales in 2021 are expected to be around € 380 million (previously € 430 million) and EBITDA around plus € 150 million (unchanged). After the increase in the previous year, net debt will decline again to around € 100 million. The investments will be around € 60 million.
