The airline Montenegro Airlines has been dissolved for a few months and is to be replaced by Air Montenegro. But now the local competition authority has found that the first-named airline wrongly received state aid totaling 2018 million euros between 2020 and 55,8.

The repayment of the funds was ordered, but that could turn out to be difficult because Montenegro Airlines is de facto bankrupt and has only been kept in the air with the help of renewed state aid in recent months. The competition authority found, among other things, that the aid granted did not comply with the guidelines of the European Union.

As a non-EU member, the state doesn't really have to worry about it. Actually, because Montenegro committed itself to applying the EU state aid guidelines some time ago as a candidate country. A repatriation of the funds is extremely unlikely due to the bankruptcy.
