Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has declared that F-35 fighter jets will be purchased for the Bundeswehr. These are intended to improve operational capability within the framework of NATO cooperation and, in an emergency, can also be equipped with US nuclear weapons.

It is currently planned that the Lockheed Martin F-35 should be stationed at the Büchel Air Base. However, this requires some conversion work, although it is still unclear whether this can be completed in time by 2026. The new acquisitions are intended to replace aging tornadoes.
