The first place among the most popular European destinations for summer holidays in 1 was once again the long-time favorite Palma de Mallorca for Germans.

A beautiful, long summer is behind us and the Germans have not missed the opportunity to enjoy a cozy break - even beyond national borders. The online travel agent Opodo takes another look back and shows which destinations were particularly popular during this summer vacation.

Surfing and swimming in the Mediterranean

The relaxed summer break was enjoyed this year far away from the national highlights on the picturesque coasts of the Mediterranean: The list once again tops Palma de Mallorca, a favorite of travelers from Germany for years. Likewise, Istanbul and the sunny and warm Barcelona found a place in the top 3 ranks. Behind them - in order of popularity - are Heraklion, Lisbon, Izmir, Malaga, Rome and Amsterdam.

But not only neighboring European countries were visited. Distant destinations are luring German travelers across borders again this year: Nairobi and Dubai were particularly popular. Cancun moves in third place. Behind them - again in order of popularity - Nairobi, Mexico City, San Jose, Bishkek, Dakar, Addis Adaba, Bogota and Punta Cana take a place in the ranking.

Be a guest in your own four walls

Auch Germany remains popular with hotel bookings for summer vacations. Berlin and Hamburg remain leading visitor magnets.
