Star Alliance has completed the development of a cross-system biometric identity and identification platform. Lufthansa and Swiss will make the start and use Star Alliance Biometrics for selected flights in November. A special infrastructure has been set up for this purpose at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs.

Customers of the frequent flyer program Miles & More who agree to participate in biometrics can access the security controls and boarding gates without contact - an important contribution to health protection in times of Covid-19. Passengers can keep their mouth and nose covers, which they have to wear in the terminal, even during the biometric identity check, as this does not affect the identification of the passengers. The identification solution used in Star Alliance Biometrics is based on the face recognition technology NEC I: Delight from the Japanese NEC Corporation.

“Personal data - such as photos and other identification features - are encrypted and securely stored within the platform. The system was developed from the start in compliance with the applicable data protection laws and based on the latest face recognition technology. The storage of personal data is limited to a necessary minimum. For example, no customer names are saved, ”it says in the broadcast.
