The rescue is approaching: after the state transport ministers, the finance ministers' conference yesterday also cleared the way for the urgently needed rescue package for the airports. In their resolutions, the federal states committed themselves to half of the aid promised by Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer at the aviation summit on November 06, 2020.

The Corona crisis has brought many airports into great economic hardship. The pandemic caused passenger numbers to drop to 1986 levels. The losses run into the billions. With only 10 percent of the otherwise usual travelers, the airports are deep in the second lockdown. But now the airports can breathe a sigh of relief: “The political blockade over the airport rescue package, which is now endangering the existence of the airports, seems to have been overcome. With the resolutions of the Conference of Finance and Transport Ministers, the federal states have met their responsibility for Germany as an aviation location. The federal states have made the commitments required by the federal government to provide half of the co-financing, ”said Ralph Beisel, General Manager of the Airport Association ADV.

Now the ball is in the field of the federal government. The airports would trust that the promised aid will be provided as quickly as possible, Beisel continued. Since the air traffic summit on November 06, 2020, expectations of the federal and state governments have been high. At this peak meeting, the Federal Transport Minister had promised an airport rescue package worth one billion euros. So far, the airports have been waiting in vain for help. Now the hoped-for ray of hope: the state finance ministers also voted in favor of financial support for the airports.
