Rhaetian Railway launches more nostalgia trips

It hisses and steams in the Landwasser valley, in the Surselva and in the Engadin: With the power of fire and water, the steam locomotive makes its rounds through the vast Graubünden. In 1889, the more than 30 km long line from Landquart to Klosters opened. Today, a 385-kilometer route network runs through the heart of the Swiss high mountains. As in the early days, the Rhaetian Railway will continue to impress this autumn with its steam journeys in charming old trains.

Only with the power of water, fire and sometimes even with "low-emission ecological heating oil" does the venerable steam horse pull the enchanting old trains through Graubünden. Full steam ahead through the picturesque Engadin, along the Rhine through the Surselva or through the wildly romantic Landwasser Valley. In the nose there is always the smell of the long-gone steam age:

Pure nostalgia and steam train romance in September and October

There are a total of three dates to choose from over two weekends: On September 09th and October 14th and 15th, 2023, rail enthusiasts can immerse themselves in the wondrous world of the steam age. With smoke and mirrors, passengers experience a piece of railway history up close in the Graubünden mountains. The trip in first class promises a special highlight: This takes place in a Belle Époque coupé including a welcome drink and coffee with pastries.

Surselva nostalgia trip

The Surselva panorama nostalgia trip in the historic carriages of the Rhaetian Railway starts in Landquart. The day trip takes you through Graubünden to Disentis/Mustér and back. After a stop in the Alpine town of Chur, the nostalgic locomotive Ge 4/6 353 then makes its way to the monumental Rhine Gorge. It crosses the Rhine Valley between the confluence of the Vorder- and Hinterrhein near Reichenau and Ilanz. After looking at the fascinating natural phenomenon, the steepest part of the route awaits, for which the locomotive is given new power with fresh water. Passengers explore the region during a short lunch stop in Disentis/Mustér. On the return journey, Chur is the last stop before Landquart.

The departure takes place at 8.55 a.m. in Landquart, it ends there at 17.13 p.m. Date: Saturday, September 9, 2023.

Steam ride Engadin / Albula

In autumn, the route between Samedan and Surava, which is harmoniously embedded in the landscape - a showpiece from the time of the railway pioneers and part of the RhB UNESCO World Heritage Site - offers a special natural spectacle. The wide mountain world of the Engadin is particularly appealing there. During longer stays in the railway villages of Filisur and Bergün, passengers have time to linger and explore. Another highlight is the return trip in the afternoon: via the loops of the Albular ramp, it offers a leisurely and at the same time intensive route and steam locomotive experience.

It starts at 8.20 a.m. in Samedan, where the journey ends at 16.20 p.m. Date: Saturday 14 October 2023.

Engadine steam ride

It's steaming and hissing at the train station in Samedan when the Engadin steam train starts. The steam locomotive, which is more than 100 years old, is slowly starting to move on October 14th and 15th, 2023. Within three hours it goes to Scuol-Tarasp, intermediate stops are in Bever, Zernez and Ardez. After a break in Scuol-Tarasp, the return trip promises rail enthusiasts a special experience of the autumnal natural scenery once again. The journeys are possible one way, return or in the opposite direction. A bar and bistro car are available in the middle of the train.

The Engadin steam train departs from Samedan at 9.59 a.m., the train reaches Scuol-Tarasp at 12.03 p.m. The departure back to Samedan starts at 13.45 p.m., the arrival in Samedan is at 16.54 p.m. Date: Saturday 14 October and Sunday 15 October 2023.
