Ryanair: Wilson finds Ljubljana airport “too expensive”

For some time now, Slovenia has been trying to attract the low-cost airline Ryanair to Ljubljana and/or Maribor. This will probably not happen any time soon in the capital, as managing director Eddie Wilson recently stated that the airport in the capital, run by Fraport, is “too expensive”.

It was recently announced that Ryanair is building a new base in nearby Trieste, Italy, and will be adding additional flights. This means that Ljubljana is likely to be out of the running – at least for the time being. Tendered subsidies also do not appear to be attractive from Ryanair's perspective.

In the past, Ryanair briefly offered flights to London-Stansted from Maribor. At that time, there was a fee dispute with Graz Airport and they quickly moved part of the service to Slovenia. This was reversed exceptionally quickly because demand from the Slovenian airport was said to be “absolutely bad”. They withdrew from Graz shortly afterwards.
