Summer vacation: Tips for using your smartphone abroad

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Tour operators are already expecting sales growth this summer compared to the last pre-Corona year 2019, because for the first time in three years Austria's holidaymakers have the opportunity to travel abroad without any pandemic restrictions.

Just like in the past, the smartphone is once again a constant companion on vacation this year. Because in addition to accessing social media to keep in touch with loved ones, the "electronic Swiss Army knife" can do more than just take photos, navigate, online banking, stream TV, radio and films.

In an emergency, make the European emergency number 112

Probably the most important aspect of taking your smartphone with you on vacation is the ability to quickly make an emergency call in the event of an emergency. The euro emergency number 112 is free and works in all EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Switzerland, Serbia and Ukraine. It can also be sold without a contract or credit.

The various emergency numbers are very different abroad. That is why the European emergency number 112 is the international emergency number. If you dial 112 anywhere in Europe (always dial without an area code!), the system automatically connects you to the nearest emergency call center. In Austria these are the control centers of the police.

No unpleasant surprises thanks to "Roam like at Home"

In other EU countries, the "Roam like at Home" regulation applies to everyone who does not use their smartphone or mobile phone primarily abroad. This means that the same tariff regulations apply as for flat rates on call minutes and on data usage as in Austria.

Caution in non-EU countries

In non-EU countries, such as Great Britain and Switzerland, the roaming regulations vary depending on the operator. The FMK recommends checking the website of your own network operator before you travel and using the additional roaming packages that are usually offered.

Attention: As soon as an invoice amount of EUR 60 is due for use, you will be informed via SMS. Exceeding this amount is only possible after confirmation.

It is best to deactivate the Mobilbox outside the EU

Outside the EU, an unanswered call forwarded to voicemail can result in charges, even if the message left is not listened to. The FMK recommends deactivating the mobile box in this case if this function is not absolutely necessary. Important here: the deactivation of the mobile box must be carried out in the home network, i.e. before the start of the journey, or at least within the EU.

In the event of loss or theft: contact the network operator immediately

If the smartphone is lost or stolen, the operator hotline should be called as soon as possible to block the SIM card. The number of the network operator hotline should be noted separately, because storing it in the mobile phone is of course pointless in this case.

Activate screen lock

To prevent misuse of the SIM card, at least the screen lock must be activated to prevent unauthorized use.

For holidays abroad: save international area codes

Stored phone numbers only work abroad in the international format: for example, 06(…..) becomes +436(…..). It is therefore advisable to check at least the most important contacts and correct them if necessary.
