The German holiday airline Sundair is replacing some of the seven aircraft in its fleet. The protective shield procedure enables the carrier to terminate the leasing contracts. The company wants to lease other Airbus jets on more favorable terms.
Company boss Marcos Rossello told the Norddeutscher Rundfunk that savings should be made in this way. Normally, leasing contracts are difficult to terminate, but in the event of bankruptcy there are no deadlines for either party. The so-called protective shield is a special procedure in German insolvency law.
The first machines are currently being prepared for return to the owners in Croatia, among others. In Ostrava, Czech Republic, “replacement aircraft” for Sundair are made ready for take-off. According to reports, at least some of these are Airbus jets that were previously in the air for Air Berlin. Sundair had to severely restrict flight operations due to the corona pandemic. In the course of the protective shield proceedings, the tour operator Schauinsland separated from the participation. Recently, however, a new route was added: Stockholm Beirut.
