The Japanese airline will be introducing a new method of cooling meals and drinks on board on all domestic flights from September 20, 2021, thereby significantly reducing CO2 emissions and operating costs.

The new refrigerant is made from a material that is used as a food additive. It is therefore safe for humans and can keep food and drinks at a stable temperature for a long period of time during the flight. Repeated use of the same cool packs will reduce the amount of packaging material used for dry ice by around 30 tons per year in the future. In addition to the positive environmental effect, this reduces costs by around 80 percent.

"The change brings ANA one step closer to achieving our sustainability goals that we have formulated in the ANA Future Promise," said Junko Yazawa, Senior Vice President Customer Experience Management & Planning. "It will benefit the environment and at the same time reduce costs, while the quality for our passengers remains fully guaranteed."
