Verdict: American Airlines/Jetblue cooperation must be dissolved

American Airlines and Jetblue Airways have been working together for some time. The cooperation must be terminated within 30 days by a decision of a US district court. The US Department of Justice had complained, fearing rising prices and higher ticket prices.

The so-called “Northeast Alliance” that the two carriers agreed on some time ago is affected. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit in 2021, believing the collaboration would adversely affect competition, service, and pricing. Since the extensive exchange of flight plan data and the coordination of this is planned, the public sector spoke of a de facto merger.

The decision is seen as a victory for the Biden administration and a victory for competition in the airline industry. American Airlines expressed disappointment with the decision and is currently evaluating its next steps.
