Austria's largest photovoltaic system is being built at 24 hectares at Vienna Airport.

55.000 PV panels are supposed to deliver an output of around 24 megawatts peak, as the airport emphasizes in a broadcast. With eight PV systems, in which a total of more than 20 million euros have been or will be invested, the airport plans to generate around 30 million kilowatt hours of solar power annually and thus draw almost a third of its annual electricity consumption from solar energy. The new facility is scheduled to go into operation in spring 2022.

Board director Günther Ofner described the PV offensive as a big step on the way to becoming “one of the first 'Green Airports' in Europe to operate CO2 neutrally”. With photovoltaics, e-mobility and new technologies to improve energy efficiency, VIE is consistently reducing its CO2 emissions, added board director Julian Jäger. “The greatest opportunity for climate protection, however, lies in synthetic fuels. The technology is there - now we need admixture obligations and investments in research and development in order to promote dissemination and create business models. "
