Wizz Air joins SAF startup

The low-cost airline Wizz Air takes a five million pound stake in the SAF manufacturer Firefly. This will be used to supply flight operations in the United Kingdom from 2028. The so-called sustainable fuel is to be produced from sewage treatment plant sludge, among other things.

Firefly specializes in a process that converts sewage sludge, a plentiful, low-value waste product, into SAF. The UK produces more than 57 million tonnes of sewage sludge every year, which could be used to produce 250.000 tonnes of SAF.

The agreement with Firefly and the investment in the new SAF technology is the latest milestone in Wizz Air's broader sustainability strategy, which also includes the ambitious fleet renewal plan and already efficient, low-cost operations with the latest technology and higher-end aircraft seat density and occupancy. This will further strengthen Wizz Air's position as an industry leader in sustainability and reinforce the company's commitment to reduce its carbon emissions per passenger/km by 2030% by 25.
