A few days ago, the airline Air Europa fell victim to a cyber attack. It has now become known that the data of around 100.000 debit and credit cards were stolen, reports the newspaper Diario de Mallorca.
The Spanish airline announced that that the payment module was attacked. The card-issuing banks were proactively informed about the hacker attack. The affected customers would have been contacted by email. It can be assumed that the issuers will replace the affected payment cards.
Citing internal sources, Diario de Mallorca also wrote that the cyberattack was most likely carried out by hackers from the Russian Federation. It is currently completely unclear whether cardholders have suffered any financial damage as a result. However, it would have to be possible to hold them harmless in the chargeback process.
By the way, this is not the first cyber attack on Air Europa. Already in 2018, hackers stole the data of around half a million customers. This had repercussions for the carrier in the form of a hefty fine, because at the time they tried to keep this secret and did not initially inform customers about the data breach.
