The Italian government founded a new company called “Italia Transporto Aero” to take over the flight operations of Alitalia. According to local media reports, the financial situation of the insolvent carrier has worsened massively due to the corona crisis. Now they want to put the chronically deficient airline back on a new company.
The Italian Ministry of Finance issued a media release on Friday confirming that four ministers have signed a decree establishing a new airline. This will be wholly owned by the Italian state. There are also signs that the name Alitalia could be abandoned, as Transport Minister Paola de Micheli referred to the new company as ITAliana. Italy should carry this out into the world. It is therefore unclear whether the ITAliana or Alitalia will be flown.
What is certain, however, is that parts of today's Alitalia will gradually be transferred to the new company. In the course of this, the fleet will be reduced considerably and many employees will no longer be required in the future. In Brussels, however, the project has not yet been submitted and an official statement indicates that the next steps will be coordinated with the EU Commission. The government also emphasizes that they want to sell the company as soon as possible.
