Hungary rushed forward at the beginning of September 2020 and, with a few exceptions, closed the borders again. The EU actually wants to prevent such steps, but traditionally Viktor Orban has little or no interest in what Brussels says. The Bavarian Minister of the Interior, Joachim Herrmann, is now calling for the Federal Republic to close its borders.
The CSU politician expressed himself a little cryptically to the newspapers of the Funke media group and indicated that increased border controls could soon be up for discussion again. At the same time, they want to keep an eye on commuters. Bavaria recently quarantined the Berchtesgadener Land district. Prime Minister Markus Söder described the process as a “regional lockdown”. On the other side of the border, Kuchl was cordoned off by the Austrian authorities.
The German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD), on the other hand, recently emphasized that closing the borders is currently not an option. He pointed out that the spring had not been good. The plans of the European Union do not provide for the sealing of the internal borders, but the nation states can issue appropriate quarantine regulations for “red countries”, which can, but do not have to be, equivalent to closing the border. By the way, according to the EU system, almost all of Europe is colored red. Only a few states still have orange spots. It is precisely this fact that airlines are criticizing, because they are of the opinion that the system agreed in Brussels is now outdated and should therefore no longer be practicable.
