The Lufthansa Group is experimenting with a paid customer loyalty program, but this is far less attractive in contrast to existing offers from competitors Wizzair and Volotea.
So-called “discount passes” are offered through the frequent flyer program Miles & More. For 149 euros you get a ten percent discount on flights of the Lufthansa Group for a year. There is a 20 percent discount for 299 euros. Alternatively, payment can also be made with 30.000 or 60.000 miles.
However, there are some hooks in the small print. For example, the discount is not granted for bookings in the "light tariff". Flights within Austria and Switzerland are excluded. At Edelweiss, the “Discount Pass” can only be used on flight numbers from LX 8000. In addition, there is a minimum stay of three days or one night on a Sunday. The discount relates to the gross final price, so the taxes are also discounted.
The discount pass is unlikely to be attractive for business travelers due to the restrictions. Lufthansa is targeting the offer primarily to private individuals. However, if you do not fly much, the savings are kept within very narrow limits, since at least the Economy Classic tariff has to be booked. The competitor Wizzair grants a discount of ten euros per one-way ticket for around 30 euros per year from a flight price of 19,99 euros. If the flight price is lower, the ticket price is reduced to 9,99 euros. The savings potential is much higher at Wizzair, as the annual "membership fee" is cheaper.
