The airline Ethiopian Airlines will connect the Star Alliance hubs Addis Ababa and Warsaw-Chopin from June 16, 2024. On the way there there is a stop in Athens, where Star Alliance partner Aegean Airlines has a hub.

This makes it clear that this is not a completely new route, as the Greek capital has long been part of Ethiopian Airlines' route network. However, this route is being extended to Warsaw, so that in the future there will also be fifth freedom flights between Athens and Warsaw and vice versa.

It is currently planned that Addis Ababa-Athens-Warsaw-Athens-Addis Ababa will be served with Boeing 737-Max-8 medium-haul jets. The journey towards Europe takes place on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The return flights operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

It is noteworthy that the Star Alliance partners Aegean and Lot are not mentioned at all in the official announcement. However, it can be assumed that various connecting connections will go on sale via the respective reservation systems at a later date. It is still completely open whether a possible code sharing could also be used on the Fifth Freedom route between Athens and Warsaw-Chopin and vice versa. Both Lot and Aegean also offer this route on their own account. There are also offers from low-cost competitors.
