Alula Aba Nega: Ethiopian's Dash 8-400 suffers landing accident

The de Havilland Dash 8-400 with registration ET-AVS, operated by Ethiopian Airlines, suffered a landing accident at Alula Aba Nega Airport on January 18, 2024 and deviated from the runway.

Under the flight number ET106, the Canadian-made turboprop aircraft was on its way from Addis Ababa to the aforementioned airport. Until landing, the flight was completely unobtrusive and therefore routine. But shortly after touching down on the runway, the ET-AVS left the runway for reasons that are still unclear.

According to Ethiopian Airlines, the incident occurred at 14:10 p.m. local time. The carrier emphasizes that all passengers and crew members were able to leave the turboprop aircraft. A few travelers are said to have suffered very minor injuries. The aviation company also wants to take a closer look at the incident itself - in addition to an official investigation by the responsible authorities - in order to find out the cause. In any case, we apologize to the affected passengers for the inconvenience caused by the unusual landing.

Local media claim that a tire burst occurred shortly after touchdown on the runway. It should be emphasized that Ethiopian Airlines does not confirm the representation. In any case, photos show that the left side landing gear, which is located below the turboprop engine on this type of machine, has collapsed. You can also see that the front door is open, but the back is closed.
