An emergency exercise involving around 100 people was carried out at Klagenfurt Airport on Saturday. A landing accident of a fictitious machine coming from Salzburg was simulated. It was a regular training course that European commercial airports have to carry out regularly.

The assumption of the exercise: At 14.00:25 p.m., a short-haul plane coming from Salzburg lands at Klagenfurt Airport. There are XNUMX people on board. On landing, the plane suddenly veered to the right, crashed through the airport fence and landed west of the ÖAMTC base. Fire breaks out, burning parts fly around.

Alert level 3 (emergency level) is declared immediately after the report by the Klagenfurt air traffic control center. All emergency organizations such as rescue, fire brigade and police are alerted. After about one and a half hours, the flight emergency exercise was over. Valuable insights were gained regarding the smooth process and the cooperation among the helpers.

The scenario was designed to be as realistic as possible: the “passengers” were in a dummy aircraft west of the ÖAMTC base. This part was taken over by students from the BG/BRG Mössinger and the Gurnitz youth fire brigade. The airport fire brigade had simulated an aircraft fire at a suitable distance from the dummy aircraft and started the extinguishing attack, supported by other fire brigades. The Red Cross rescued the injured and transported them away after first aid. The police cordoned off the alleged accident site and began investigating.

The official observer from the Supreme Civil Aviation Authority, which is based at the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection (BMK), was also present. His statement will be available in November. “I would like to thank everyone involved for their professional commitment. The flight emergency exercise showed us how important it is for all emergency organizations and our airport team to work together,” said Airport Klagenfurt Managing Director Nils Witt.
