The United Aircraft Corporation or its subsidiary Irkut was defeated in Moscow in an unusual legal dispute. The manufacturer sued a total of three insurance companies for payment, because in 2015 a Sukhoi Superjet SSJ-100 parked in Indonesia is said to have been downright cannibalized.
Irkut is of the opinion that one was robbed of demands from the insurance companies and 2,4 million euros. It was assumed that it was a clear insured event, but the confused ownership of the machine was now the aircraft manufacturer's undoing. At the time of the theft, the SSJ-100 in question was formally owned by a company based in Switzerland. This has meanwhile been liquidated. The manufacturer only acquired the regional jet in December 2015.
According to a report by the RIA Novosti agency, the stolen parts reappeared on the black market in 2016. Superjet International was able to secure a total of 52 components. In rejecting the claims, the judge stated that the plaintiff had not proven the fact of the occurrence of the event, the amount of damage, or issued an opinion to Indonesian law enforcement agencies.
The court also found that the owner of the aircraft at the time was Maple Aviation Leasing GmbH, a company based in Zug, Switzerland that went into liquidation in 2019. Together with the Russian VEB, Maple was the beneficiary of the policy. In the specific case, the Irkut subsidiary could not be regarded as the actual plaintiff. The court found that SCAC had only bought the aircraft in December 2015. However, the incident occurred between September and October 2015.
