Oneworld member American Airlines and Boom Supersonic have reached an agreement in principle to purchase 20 supersonic aircraft. A deposit of an undisclosed amount has already been transferred. This is non-refundable, so the developer can freely dispose of it.
However, American Airlines sets numerous conditions for the actual acceptance of supersonic aircraft. These would have to meet certain requirements in the areas of safety, performance and operation. The airline also makes numerous special requests that Boom Supersonic has to implement.
Some time ago, the competitor United Airlines secured 15 copies of the new development. Options are also held for 35 additional machines. American Airlines has 20 purchase rights in addition to the order.
It is still unclear when the Overture will go into active service. The manufacturer's current schedule stipulates that the roll-out should take place in 2025. It is currently assumed that the first commercial flight can be carried out in the course of 2019. However, it is still unclear whether the plans can be met.
American Airlines promises that the supersonic aircraft could be used from Los Angeles and Miami in the direction of Hawaii and London, among other things. The travel time would then be reduced to around three or five hours.
