Last week Lufthansa woke the third Airbus A380 from its slumber with the D-AIML. The super jumbo was transferred from Teruel to Frankfurt am Main on April 21, 20233. The nine-year-old jet had been parked since the beginning of the corona pandemic.
Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr initially thought it unlikely that the Airbus A380 machines in Lufthansa colors would ever return to scheduled service. The decision was later changed and it was announced that some units will make a comeback in the summer of 2023. In the meantime, three super jumbos have been brought back to Germany.
Lufthansa has already reactivated two A380s, the first of which returned to Munich Airport on April 12, 2023 after a three-year hiatus. The airline opted for the return of wide-body aircraft to meet high passenger demand for air travel in the ongoing 2023 summer season. The second reason for this step is significant delays in the delivery of new aircraft.
Before the corona pandemic, the Kranich Group had 14 Airbus A380s. However, some units have been separated, so that now you only have new pieces. According to the airline's plan, Lufthansa will operate four aircraft of this type from one of its two main bases at Munich Airport by the end of the year.
The airline has already started ticket sales for long-haul flights on two initial routes between Germany and the US, which will serve the reactivated widebody aircraft. According to the original plan, Lufthansa will start flights on the Munich-Boston route on June 1, 2023. Flights to New York-JFK Airport are scheduled to begin on July 4, 2023.
