The low-cost airline Easyjet is facing increasing competition in Italy from its Hungarian competitor Wizz Air. Arch-rival Ryanair is also expanding. Now they want to strike back and announce the increase in the number of stationed aircraft.
In Milan-Malpensa, the largest Easyjet Europe base in Italy, they want to fly with 24 instead of 21 Airbus jets in the future. First and foremost, the frequencies on existing routes are to be increased. To a lesser extent, the company also operates from the inner-city Linate Airport. The company emphasizes that there will be growth here too.
In the future, six instead of four Easyjet planes will be stationed in Naples. There are three machines in Venice. Here, too, the primary aim is to strengthen existing routes, but also to expand.
“Italy was and has always been a key market for us: In Milan Malpensa we have our largest operational base in continental Europe and the most innovative training center for pilots and flight attendants in the industry. The rigorous approach to cost management that was maintained during the health crisis allows us to invest heavily again in the Italian market, which we plan to return to soon, serving more than 20 million passengers every year, ”said Easyjet CEO Johan Lundgren.
Until the start of the corona pandemic, Easyjet used Terminal 2 at Milan-Malpensa airport almost exclusively. You want to do it again as soon as possible, because the short distances are better suited for low-cost airlines. Most of the other lowcosters also flew from Terminal 1 before the crisis.
