The General Court of the European Union has declared the approval of state aid granted by the EU Commission for the Greek Aegean Airlines to be inadmissible. The competition watchdogs had insufficiently examined the carrier's financial position.

The EU court ruled, among other things, that the license cannot be brought into line with applicable law. However, this does not mean that Aegean has to repay the money already received immediately. First of all, the EU Commission, as the authority concerned, has the opportunity to improve the reasoning, taking into account the court decision.

In this specific case, this means that Aegean has to carry out a comprehensive review of the financial situation. The EU Commission then has to find a new formulation for the approval of state aid. It can be assumed that Ryanair will then sue again. This is what happened in the case of TAP Air Portugal.
