According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), civil passenger air traffic fell by 60 percent in the previous year. 1,8 billion passengers were carried worldwide, which means that the industry has fallen back to 2013 levels.
For comparison: In 2019, 4,5 billion passengers flew worldwide. Given the pandemic, it's hardly surprising that the lion's share of the decline was seen in international traffic. Among other things, tough entry and quarantine regulations, which have had a negative impact on demand, are responsible for this. According to the ICAO, 74 percent fewer travelers were counted in international traffic. In contrast, the break-in on domestic flights was not too severe. The International Civil Aviation Organization announced that this has been reduced by about half.
For the current year 2021, the ICAO expects that demand will remain low in the first quarter. It cannot be ruled out that the tightening of measures by various states will result in a further decline. At a tender level, an increase is not expected until spring and summer 2021.
