The Upper Austrian airport Linz-Hörsching is starting the summer season with a newly designed passenger terminal. The airport used the long break to push ahead with the revitalization of the interior.

“In contrast to the freight business, which is currently booming, we had to endure a long dry spell in passenger traffic. The first passenger planes will take off again in Linz in mid-June. We have therefore used the last few months to redesign the “inner workings” of our passenger terminal. The top priority was to make the processes even faster, easier and more convenient for our passengers, ”explains Norbert Draskovits, Managing Director of Linz Airport.

Mayor Klaus Luger, owner representative of the city of Linz, assumes that it will be more and more difficult for traditional regional airports to secure existing flight connections or to acquire new flight connections.

“We see very clearly that many airlines are increasingly concentrating on volume markets and that decentralized markets are becoming less important. This trend has intensified again by the Covid 19 pandemic. In the past 20 years, the airport has always had a positive balance. This means that the company has sufficient reserves to cope with such a crisis economically. Nevertheless, the company has to drive on sight and also act with foresight when making investments. The thermal renovation and redesign of the passenger terminal are strategically important investments that not only make the airport more sustainable, but also create noticeable added value for passengers. The owners have therefore decided to implement these conversions according to plan, ”said Mayor Luger.

As part of the modernization of the interior, the first step was to renew the travel agency counters, integrate the car rental companies in the arrivals area, expand the security streets and build the Café Frederick & Sons in cooperation with the operator DoN. In addition, the entire terminal and the parking lot facilities were converted to LED lighting.

In a second step, which has already been successfully completed, the redesign of the transit area was on the agenda. The focus was on the Frederick & Sons Marketplace, also built with DoN, which combines shopping opportunities with a range of dining options for passengers. Both the café in the departure hall and the marketplace in the transit area were planned and implemented by the interior designers from the Stelzer-Wögerer team. The past months have been used for a far-reaching redesign of the duty-free at Linz Airport. The new shop-in-shop concept Frederick & Sons Marketplace opens on June 10th in the transit area of the airport. The ideal combination of relaxation and shopping before departure. A holiday for the palate is the motto of the event series “After Work World Tour”, to which DoN invites every Thursday from 16 p.m. on the visitor terrace of the airport. Every week a different destination with its special features takes center stage - Cuba, Japan, Italy. Cool drinks, fine cuisine and the best atmosphere are offered in an incomparable ambience.
