The Macedonian government wants to boost air traffic in the country and is also digging into its own pockets.
The Minister of Transport and Communications guarantees airlines financial incentives when they start new routes. This year, a total of 1,1 million euros would be distributed in subsidies. This is intended to further expand air traffic in the Balkan state. In recent years, however, such tenders have not exactly been crowned with success. The low-cost company Wizz Air was the only airline to show its interest and thus won all of the money. The Hungarian carrier has already announced that it will soon be offering flights between Abu Dhabi and Skopje, like the aviation portal Swiss Aviation reported. Last year, the Slovenian government opted for a similar strategy by granting airlines flying into the country almost a million euros. Also this year, aviation companies are to be rewarded for taking on new routes.
