The holiday airline Edelweiss has to turn the Male flight plan upside down. The background to this is that slots at the Maldives airport have been lost due to a reduction in the capacity of international flights. This also has "side effects" on other routes.
Male Airport has extended the minimum time between landings for international flights. This measure eliminates a large number of slots at Male International Airport. This capacity reduction also has an impact on Edelweiss flights. The result is that the Swiss sister company cannot operate the flights scheduled for Monday and Thursday. There will be new flights to Male on Sunday and Friday; on Friday via Colombo. The Saturday flight will take place as planned and will not be affected by the changes.
Due to the adjustments to the Maldives rotations, flights to other destinations must also be adjusted. One of two weekly flights each had to be postponed: Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar will be served on Tuesday and now on Thursday instead of Friday. There are flights to Cape Town on Wednesdays and now on Mondays instead of Sundays. The flight to Colombo will now be operated on Friday in combination with Male instead of Thursday.
“Like other airlines, we were surprised by the news that there are fewer slots available in Male. Despite intervention, including on a political level, we were unable to find another solution. We deeply regret the flight plan adjustments that have become necessary as a result. We are aware that such changes can cause inconvenience for our guests ”, explains Patrick Heymann, Chief Commercial Officer of Edelweiss.
