The volume of traffic at Munich Airport continues to increase significantly. The third quarter brought the airport its biggest growth since the beginning of the pandemic. In total, over 5,1 million passengers were counted in the past three months, more than twice as many as in the same period of the previous year.

The highest number of passengers since the beginning of the pandemic was achieved with 1,9 million passengers in September. This means that the airport booked almost as many passengers this month as in the entire first half of 2021. In the first six months there were a total of 2,2 million travelers. ”The volume of traffic in Munich is now at a significantly higher level than last year . All signals point to a further recovery in air traffic. Munich Airport is well on the way to further consolidating its function as a European premium hub, ”said Jost Lammers, CEO of Flughafen München GmbH (FMG).

The fact that Munich is increasingly being used as a hub is also clear from a look at the number of transfer passengers: While their share of the total passenger volume in May was only 21 percent, it was recently 38 percent. The opening of the USA announced for November will bring another boost to hub traffic. Lufthansa will increase its existing routes to New York to ten weekly connections and Los Angeles to seven weekly flights. There are also other long-haul connections to North American travel destinations: Miami, Mexico City and Montreal will be served from November and, for the first time, Vancouver will be served in the winter flight schedule.

Despite the very dynamic traffic development, the current volume is still well below the pre-crisis level: the passenger numbers in September 2021 correspond to around 40 percent of the volume that was achieved in September 2019 - i.e. before the corona pandemic. The current volume of flight movements is half of the pre-crisis level.
