The ailing airline Alitalia is to be relaunched under state ownership. The company "ITA" was founded for this purpose. It has now been announced that the fleet is to be reduced to 75 machines.
The structure is to be reduced by 30 percent. Around 7.000 employees are to be taken over by today's Alitalia. Italia Transporto Aereo will focus on long-haul and cargo flights. In future, the regional route network will be operated by Alitalia Cityliner, which is to be positioned in the direction of low cost. Politicians are convinced that the "new Alitalia" can fly into the profit zone within the next five years.
However, around 3.000 employees will remain with the old company. These cannot be terminated for various reasons. In order to be able to avoid dismissals, these should be on the “payroll” of the state until further notice. With regard to the fleet, consideration is currently being given to purchasing Boeing 787s and up to six pure cargo aircraft. However, binding decisions have not yet been made.
