One would logically suspect technology for defense against drones at airports. In Austria, however, this was not the case, because the Ministry of the Interior stored these at other locations and only managed to get them here if necessary, which was time-consuming. The Court of Auditors criticizes the approach.
He scrutinized the period from 2013 to 2017 and came to the conclusion that the Ministry of the Interior's practice was unrealistic. Neither Austro Control nor the Austrian airports had the appropriate stationary technology available. If there were disruptions caused by drones, the Federal Ministry of the Interior had to literally cart them on first and so, according to the Court of Auditors, their use was only possible with a time delay.
“Because there was a significant risk of personal injury and property damage, the Court of Auditors recommended that the Ministry of the Interior provide at least one drone defense system on site for each of the largest airports. In addition, strategies for defense against drones are to be developed for airports ”, can be read in the communication from the Parliamentary Directorate.
