There are few hopes at Qatar Airways that the A380 partial fleet, which consists of ten units, will be used again soon. Company boss Akbar Al-Baker said during a virtual conference that they will stay on the ground in the coming year and possibly also in 2022.
The manager does not expect the superjumbos to be able to be put back into regular service with Qatar Airways in the next few years. From 2024, the sub-fleet is to be dissolved anyway, because from this point in time the leasing contracts will end. The ten machines are currently shut down and are in what is known as long-time storage.
The Qatar CEO criticizes the competitor Emirates, which is gradually putting A380s back into regular service. That would be “foolish” and lead to an oversupply of seats. This should also dampen the recovery in ticket prices, as Emirates would throw an oversupply on the market that would ultimately have to be sold off. This would then also have negative effects on competitors such as Qatar Airways.
