The change in Austrian entry requirements means that antigen self-tests are also recognized. However, these must be registered via the relevant apps or web apps of the federal states. Sounds complicated, but it's very simple.

Every federal state has its own solution, which works completely differently, but Lower Austria has put something up on its feet that is particularly practical for holidaymakers. All residents of Austria can use the Lower Austrian tool. According to the state, a residence in Lower Austria is expressly not necessary.

What do you need for the Lower Austria self-test?

  • Antigen rapid test kit (e.g. free "living room tests" from the pharmacy)
  • Touch-up pencil ("Edding")
  • Social security number
  • Smartphone with photo function
  • Internet connection (e.g. WLAN in the hotel or mobile phone network)

How does this work?

Under this link at the state of Lower Austria the so-called web app can be found. This works directly in the browser so that no additional download is necessary.

In the first step you have to enter the mobile phone number and you will then receive a code via SMS. This must be written on the test kit with the touch-up pen or another pen that is easy to read on the plastic of the test kit.

Now carry out the self-test according to the instructions (package insert).

After the result is available, it continues in the system of the state of Lower Austria. You now add the personal data and have to enter the code that you received via SMS. Then two photos must be taken via the web app: 1.) You take a photo of the result that is displayed on the kit, whereby the code that you have written on it must be easy to read. 2.) Now a touch-up pen is an advantage, because the kit has to be “canceled”, that is, crossed out across the board, painted, whatever. 3.) take a photo of the "canceled" test kit.

In the last step, you send everything to the state of Lower Austria and then receive a link to the certificate via SMS. With a slight delay, an EU certificate can then also be called up via a mobile phone signature in the Green Passport. The confirmation, which you can download by SMS from the state of Lower Austria, entitles you to travel to Austria from July 1, 2021.

How much does this rapid test cost?

If you use the free test kits that every resident of Austria can pick up in the pharmacy, then nothing at all. The use of the Lower Austrian system is free of charge and, in contrast to the other federal states, no prior registration is required.

Tip: Every resident of Austria receives ten free antigen rapid test kits per month. These can be picked up in pharmacies. People who do not take part in ELGA also receive this, but have to contact the health insurance company once for a confirmation.

Can quick test kits be carried in hand luggage?

Yes, of course. These are considered medical goods and are therefore also excluded from the Liquid Ordinance.

I live in Bregenz, for example. Can I also use the Lower Austria web app?

Yes, according to the state of Lower Austria, the tool is there for everyone and in tests carried out by Aviation Direct, addresses in various federal states have been accepted.

How long does it take to get the confirmation?

This will be sent as an SMS link immediately after you have sent the photos. During the tests, the maximum waiting time for the SMS was three minutes. This is then valid for 24 hours.

Is there more information or step-by-step instructions anywhere?

Yes of course. Directly from the state of Lower Austria under this link. There is also an explanatory video there. Brief reminder: Self-tests that are registered via Lower Austria, for example, can only be used for entry into Austria from July 1, 2021.
