In the previous year, the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook caused a stir, because it also revealed that Germany had implemented the package travel directive inadequately. The security with only 100 million euros was not sufficient. The state therefore had to step in and reimburse the injured parties for their down payments or additional costs. But now it has become known that only half of those entitled to claim have submitted their claims.
The Federal Ministry of Justice confirmed to the Tagesspiegel that 95.600 applications had been received. The deadline for assertion against the Federal Republic of Germany expires on November 15, 2020. So far, the federal government has provided 225 million euros for this, with only 35 million euros being paid out. According to the ministry, the money is on the way in 23.6000 cases. The total number of applications submitted so far is roughly half of those that were not or only partially compensated by Zurich Insurance due to the bankruptcy of the Thomas Cook Group due to underinsurance.
