The Gozo Heliport (GZM) has been in a kind of deep sleep for many years. The non-stop helicopter flights to / from Luqa are long history. There are repeated attempts to reactivate them, but this has not yet happened. Now Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri is making a new attempt.
The heart of the plan is the Extension of the ultra-short slope of the Gozo Heliport. This is to be expanded within the existing boundaries of the airfield. The aim is for small planes to take off and land. Camilleri wants to model the Fast ferries between the capital and Mgarr Establish regular flight connections from / to Luqa. He also hopes that flight schools will settle at the heliport.
However, it is unlikely that turboprop aircraft will be able to take off and land on the short airstrip of the Gozo Heliport in the future. The plans provide that small, propeller-driven private planes can take off and land. The planned air taxi service, which is to be put out to tender shortly, could, for example, be implemented with 9-seaters. In any case, parliament gave the gozo the go-ahead for the ministry's plans.
The heliport is currently a kind of defacto lost place. The small terminal has not been used for flight operations for many years and is not in a particularly attractive condition. The corona pandemic meant that a little more life has returned to the area, because the Ministry of Health uses the forecourt and parts of the small terminal for a corona test station.
