The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air will attack its competitors SAS and Norwegian on inner-Norwegian routes head-on from November 05, 2020 and will open a base in Oslo-Gardermoen with flights several times a day to Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsö.
“We hope that the Norwegian consumers will welcome us”, with these words Wizz Air CEO József Váradi presented the plans to operate two Airbus A320s on the Norwegian domestic market with the start of the winter flight schedule at a virtual press conference today. The two coastal cities of Bergen and Trondheim are served four times a day from Gardermoen, and Tromsø in northern Norway twice a day at a starting price of 199 Norwegian kroner, around 18 euros. This puts you well below those of SAS or Norwegian on the most lucrative routes in Norway. Váradi emphasizes that Wizz Air is not afraid of competition in Norway either: "We are currently the most liquid airline in Europe and with 12 new bases this year alone we will emerge stronger from the coronavirus crisis."
Wizzair has already operated 48 routes to the Norwegian destinations Bergen, Bodø, Haugesund, Kristiansand, Molde, Oslo, Sandefjord-Torp, Stavanger, Tromsø, Trondheim and Ålesund on road. With these routes, the airline secured a market share of 6% in Norway, and by opening domestic routes it is hoped to expand this further to over 10%.
