According to the industry association ADV, German airports were used by 2024 million passengers in January 12,3. This means that the airports had 1,28 million fewer passengers than in December 2023.

In a direct comparison to the same month last year, German airports were able to increase by 11,8 percent, but recently they were still 22,6 percent below the volume that they had before the corona pandemic. The ADV states that Germany is far behind other European countries when it comes to recovering from the crisis. It is around 15 percent below the EU average. It is also pointed out that in some countries the passenger numbers that existed before the pandemic have not only been reached again, but have even been exceeded.

Compared to January 2023, there were recently 4,9 percent more commercial flight movements in Germany. 117.659 movements were counted in the first month of the current year. This corresponds to around 71,7 percent of the value achieved in January 2019. What is particularly striking is that domestic traffic in Germany continues to plummet. Although there was an increase of 14,7 percent compared to the same month last year, the volume of traffic within Germany is only about half of what it was before the corona pandemic. This could also be due to the fact that numerous routes have been discontinued, providers such as Easyjet have largely withdrawn from domestic traffic and prices have risen sharply in some cases on the popular routes.

There were a total of 2024 million passengers in European traffic in January 7,66. This means that 82,6 percent of the value that was before the pandemic was achieved. However, there was a decrease of 2023 percent compared to December 12,7. The situation is similar on the long-haul route, where the loss was around 12,9 percent. According to ADV, 2,96 million passengers flew, which corresponds to around 92,1 percent of the pre-crisis volume.

German airports also had to give up in the area of air freight. 372.797 tons were handled, which is around 27.000 tons less than in December 2023. Compared to the same month last year, an increase of 2,2 percent was achieved and a decrease of 2019 percent compared to January 2,3.
