On March 8, 2024, a baby was born on board Wizz Air UK flight W95170, operated by the Airbus A321neo with registration G-WUKW. A doctor who happened to be on board provided technical assistance.
The medium-haul jet was on the way from Amman to London-Luton. During the flight a baby seemed to be born. The mother suddenly went into labor. The cabin crew made an announcement to ask whether there was a doctor on board. A doctor then called in.
A galley was quickly converted into a makeshift delivery room. The girl saw the light of day while still above the clouds. According to a post from the doctor, this happened at around 30.000 feet altitude. The captain decided that, for the health of the mother and newborn, a stopover would be made at Brindisi Airport in Italy.
There the two were taken over by medical staff and taken to a hospital for examination as a purely precautionary measure. The flying “obstetrician” said that it was an unforgettable and beautiful experience for him as a doctor.
However, some passengers saw things differently, as the child's mother was heavily criticized on social media. It is assumed that she ignored the airline's regulations and boarded the plane even though she was no longer allowed to fly because she was pregnant. The flight was delayed by around 24 hours due to Flight Duty regulations and Wizz Air is said to be strictly refusing to pay any compensation, pointing out that it was clearly a medical emergency and that this was an exceptional circumstance would be within the meaning of the Air Passenger Rights Ordinance.
