The state airline Aeroflot plans to convert its short- and medium-haul fleet to models manufactured in the Russian Federation. A total of 323 machines are to be ordered from the Rostec subsidiary UAC.
The fleet in this segment currently consists of aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. Due to the sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation in the wake of the war of aggression against Ukraine, including by the USA and the European Union, neither new equipment nor spare parts can be obtained.
The Russian government is therefore forcing airlines to switch to domestically manufactured aircraft. However, the project is not that easy, because a lot of Western technology is installed in the current models. These components are no longer accessible, meaning that production has to be fundamentally reorganized. That won't happen overnight, so it will still be some time before the aircraft announced by Aeroflot can be built "purely Russian".
Specifically, the state airline wants to order 210 Irkut MS-21, 73 Sukhoi Superjet SSJ-100 and 40 Tupolev Tu-214. With the first model, you are a first-time customer and would top up an existing order. The Tu-204/214 series was already in operation a few years ago, but was phased out due to lack of profitability. The Superjets have been gradually handed over to the subsidiary Rossiya for some time, so it is to be expected that new additions could be operated by this company.
