During the landing approach, the pilots of a Flybondi flight had to contend with strong crosswinds at Jorge Newbery in Buenos Aires. The process was aborted and the Boeing 737-800 took off.
The incident was accidentally caught on video by an eyewitness and shared on social media. According to reports, the wind direction suddenly and unpredictably changed from north-west to south-west shortly before the planned landing. The low-cost airline's medium-haul jet is said to have been exposed to gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour.
In the video embedded below, the moment when the Boeing 737-800 is caught in the strong crosswind is clearly visible. For safety reasons, the two pilots decided to abort the attempt to land. They got off to a successful start and were able to prevent a serious accident from happening.
The so-called "go-around" maneuver is always practiced when the pilots - for whatever reason - are of the opinion that a safe landing is not possible. For example, people, vehicles or objects that were not expected can be on the slope. In this specific case, the Flybondi aircraft was caught in a strong crosswind, so go-around is a safe option, because the risk of “going through” the landing under these circumstances would have been far too great.
