The long-distance bus operator Blablabus will temporarily cease operations on October 26, 2020. The company justifies the step with the weak demand due to the corona pandemic and the currently tightening entry and quarantine regulations. The second restart is scheduled for spring 2021.
It is not the first time that this provider has completely stopped line operations due to the corona pandemic. From March to June 2020, driving operations were temporarily suspended. Since then, numerous routes have been resumed, but that is over now. After October 26, 2020, Blablabus will take a second Corona break. The restart has been announced for spring 2021 without a specific date.
The market leader Flixbus has thinned out the route network considerably in the past few days and weeks. Many routes pause temporarily or are at least only served to a very limited extent. On international connections, the entry and quarantine regulations lead to a sharp decline in demand. Within Germany, the load factor after the resumption of operations was significantly below the values that could be achieved before the corona pandemic. The Flixtrain offshoot is currently on hold, with one of the operational partners, Leo Express, having to file for bankruptcy in the meantime. However, the group repeatedly stated that the railway lines should be operated again.
The greatly reduced long-distance bus offer also has an impact on the connection options at airports. Before the corona pandemic, most airports were used with high frequency in order to bring as many travelers as possible to the airport or to pick them up there, at most locations there are only a few, if at all, frequencies per day.
