The extent of the corona pandemic can be seen more clearly in the passenger numbers at Klagenfurt Airport than at any other Austrian airport: for three months there were no commercial take-offs or landings, or passengers. The “absolute zero point” ran through the months of April, May and June 2020 in Carinthia.
Klagenfurt started 2020 with 15.461 passengers. In a direct comparison with January 2016, this means a decrease of 14 percent. The number of flight movements fell by eight percent to 253 take-offs or landings. In February 2020, Klagenfurt also recorded a ten percent decrease to 14.665 travelers. The movements fell by seven percent to 220 aircraft movements.
In March 2020, the corona pandemic made things go downhill: 70 percent fewer passengers (5.556) and 54 percent fewer aircraft movements (117). This was followed by a three-month dry spell from April to the end of June with no commercial flight movements and passengers. The opening times were severely restricted.
Since July 2020 things have slowly been on the up in Klagenfurt: 28 take-offs or landings (minus 91 percent) and 2.716 passengers (minus 87 percent) were counted. In August, 3.225 travelers were en route from the Carinthian airport. In direct comparison with the same month last year, this means a minus of 85 percent. The number of take-offs or landings was 38 flight movements - a decrease of 88 percent.
In Klagenfurt, constant numbers or possibly even a minimal increase compared to August 2020 can be expected. The reason for this is that Austrian Airlines is cautiously expanding the hub connection to Vienna in November. All further developments depend on political decisions relating to the corona pandemic.
