Eurowings Germany has deployed the first Airbus A320neo. This bears the registration D-AENA and is the first of a total of 13 A320neo/A321neo that the Lufthansa subsidiary will receive. The first commercial flight is scheduled to depart from Düsseldorf in early June 2022.

The medium-haul jet was received in Toulouse, France, and transferred to Düsseldorf under flight number EW6971. There the newcomer was greeted by the airport fire brigade with a water fountain. The technical operation in Düsseldorf with more than 200 employees will carry out the rest of the upgrade of the aircraft in the next few weeks. The first commercial flight with passengers is expected to take place in early June.

"Significantly quieter and with significant fuel and CO2 savings, the aircraft is a decisive lever in the implementation of our ambitious environmental goals. The neo will also help us to fly at the top of the competition in the discipline of sustainability – together with the entire Lufthansa Group,” explains Eurowings Managing Director Jens Bischof.

“We are delighted that the first Eurowings A320neo has landed at Düsseldorf Airport. Compared to similar models, the aircraft type is characterized by more efficient fuel consumption and lower noise emissions. This is an important step on the way to climate-friendly air transport. Together with our strong airline partner, we have climate and environmental protection firmly in our sights and have set ourselves clear goals. The airport wants to be climate-neutral by 2035,” emphasizes Thomas Schnalke, CEO of Düsseldorf Airport.

Eurowings is the first and only airline in the Lufthansa Group to equip all 13 neos with the LEAP (Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion) engine from CFM. The new, significantly larger engines can save a further 3.700t of CO2 per aircraft and year. Thanks to the reduced fuel consumption, the neo also has a range of around 500 kilometers more than its predecessor. The 800 meter long wing tips, so-called sharklets, ensure an additional 2t of CO2,40 savings per aircraft and year.

Eurowings will receive a total of eight 320-seat A180neos and five 321-seat A232neos. A total of seven A320neos will be flown in in 2022, and another in 2024. Eurowings will receive five Airbus A321neos in the course of 2023. The flown-in of the aircraft is part of Eurowings' diverse activities and measures to noticeably reduce aircraft noise.

The A320neo will have 180 seats at Eurowings. The A321neo will have 232 seats and will be used, for example, on busy holiday flights to Palma de Mallorca, for example. The new luggage compartments in the Airspace Cabin have a 40 percent larger volume and even hold 60 percent more suitcases, as these can be stowed vertically in the compartments. Another highlight is the new flexible lighting system, which, depending on the flight phase and time of day, is based on the biorhythm of the passengers and illuminates the cabin in either warm orange or cooler blue tones.
