In a press release, Dortmund Airport regrets the closure of the local Wizz Air base, but emphasizes that the Hungarian carrier will continue to be active from this airport.

Accordingly, Wizz Air wants to offer a total of 2021 destinations from the regional airport in the winter flight schedule 22/31. According to the airport, only around 15 percent of the passenger volume should be directly attributable to the base. The vast majority use machines that are stationed abroad.

“In the record year 2019, a total of 1,88 million passengers used the Hungarian airline from / to Dortmund for their trip - without a base at Dortmund Airport. This volume is still there as this traffic will remain unaffected by the closure. In addition, there are six routes that were previously served by the aircraft stationed in Dortmund, but should not be excluded from the flight plan in the future either. The airport therefore estimates the potential number of Wizz Air guests during normal flight operations at around 2 million per year, ”the airport said in a broadcast.

At the same time, Dortmund Airport is holding out the prospect that Wizz Air could increase its Greece destinations in the summer flight schedule of 2022. The carrier intends to make a decision in this regard in November 2021. Some base destinations that Wizz Air will initially no longer fly to as of winter. These include destinations such as Catania, Malaga or Porto.

“We regret Wizz Air's decision to close the base at Dortmund Airport. At the same time, we are of course pleased that the airline is still sticking to the Dortmund location. Under the given conditions, we can still be satisfied with our numbers and the prospects. The discussions with our airline customers are still good and constructive. and our goal is to continue to catch up with the good passenger development in 2019 as quickly as possible, ”explains Dortmund boss Ludger van Bebber.
