The low-cost airline Easyjet is currently expecting that business will be largely normal in the 2022 summer flight schedule. The effects of the Omikron variant were felt strongly in the winter flight schedule, because bookings plummeted from December 2021.
In the first quarter of the current financial year, which ended on December 31, 2021, the carrier flew in around £213 million. Compared to the previous period, the shortfall was reduced by around half. Turnover was £805 million. 11,9 million passengers had been transported.
Easyjet announced that in January 2022 the effects of the Omicron variant will still be clearly reflected in the numbers. Demand plummeted in December 2021. Nevertheless, CEO Johan Lundgren remains confident and expects a strong summer season.
The available capacity is currently around 50 percent. In the main travel season, i.e. July and August 2022, the carrier wants to reach the pre-crisis level. After the announcement of the easing of entry requirements by the United Kingdom, there was a small boom in new bookings, according to Easyjet.
“We are looking forward to a strong summer with pent-up demand taking Easyjet back to capacity close to 2019 levels, with service from the UK to beach and holiday destinations performing particularly well,” explains Johan Lundgren.
