In the meantime, so-called “pays” are sprouting up like mushrooms, because in addition to Google Pay, there are now Apple Pay, Payback Pay, Lidl Pay and, more recently, Emirates Pay. The latter product is launched in Germany and the United Kingdom.
It is a solution developed by IATA in cooperation with Deutsche Bank. Emirates will introduce this "white label". Passengers should be able to use this to pay for their flight tickets directly with their bank account without a credit or debit card. The advantage for airlines is that commissions that are required from issuers and payment service providers are saved.
“We are pleased to be the first airline to introduce this new account-based solution. Our goal is to offer our customers a wide selection, special amenities and the best possible service experience at every point of contact. Customers without a credit card and customers who already use direct payment methods for other purchases will be delighted with the ease of use and security of Emirates Pay. When it comes to payment solutions, we are always close to the latest innovations to provide the safest and most convenient options, ”said Michael Doersam, Emirates Chief Financial Officer.
The solution is based on real-time payments and open banking and request-to-pay standards: Emirates provides all the necessary account and payment information, and passengers confirm the payment via their online or mobile banking.
“We are proud that Emirates - recognized as one of the best airlines in the world - is the first company in the aviation industry to introduce this new payment option for its passengers. The launch of Emirates Pay is a positive signal that the aviation industry is leaving the corona pandemic behind. We welcome Emirates' clear focus on improving the customer experience when processing payments, ”said Christof Hofmann, Global Head of Corporate & Payment Solutions at Deutsche Bank.
