After more than 20 years, Hamburg Airport is getting a new CEO, as Michael Eggenschwiler will retire at the end of 2023. He is succeeded by Christian Kunsch, who has been part of the company management since 2019.
Berit Schmitz, who will be appointed to the management board in the coming year, is a new member of the management committee of the north German airport. In her career to date, she has been on the management board of Hanover Airport and most recently as managing director of the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft.
As a result, Hamburg Airport will be managed by Christian Kunsch (Chairman) and Berit Schmitz from 2024. "It is an honor for me that the shareholders have appointed me as CEO on January 1, 2024 - this gives me the opportunity to continue the successful work started with Michael Eggenschwiler and to shape the future of the airport. We are currently feeling how strongly the demand for air travel is picking up again. Here it is important to push ahead with the development towards a sustainable infrastructure and aviation technology. I am looking forward to tackling this task as a team and to having an experienced aviation expert on the management board,” said Kunsch.
The new management will take office in the first quarter of next year; Christian Kunsch will assume the new role on January 1st, and Berit Schmitz on April 1st at the latest. Shareholders in the partially privatized airport are the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg with 51 percent and AviAlliance GmbH with 49 percent.
"I am very pleased to take up the position of commercial director at Hamburg Airport and to continue writing the success story of the largest airport in northern Germany together with Christian Kunsch. After the corona pandemic, it is now important to map growth in air traffic again and to tackle the challenges of the future. I'm looking forward to getting to know my colleagues at the airport company itself and the business partners at the airport and getting to know each other," explains Berit Schmitz.
