As of October 28, 2021, it is forbidden in Hawaii to approach spinner dolphins near the coast by less than 50 meters. The government legally prohibits so-called dolphin swimming, which has previously been a tourist attraction.

The reason is that this species is nocturnal and stays in shallow bays during the day to complete rest phases there. The result is that these dolphins are relatively easy to access. Animal rights activists are of the opinion that the marine mammals suffer massive damage if they are permanently disturbed in their half-sleep.

For obvious reasons, dolphins do not keep a complete sleep, but alternately half-sided. In the event of danger, the animals can become active at lightning speed. It is now legally forbidden to approach the animals. This also includes boats and canoes.

In the last few years tourist dolphin tours are said to have taken on a dimension that has little to do with classic observation. Hawaii wants to end this commercial branch in terms of animal welfare. Dolphins can, if the intelligent marine mammals so want, be trusting and curious. However, it becomes problematic when the animal actually wants to have its peace and quiet and people become intrusive. Attacks against people occur time and again around the world. Dolphins only use this remedy if they see themselves or their offspring disturbed or in danger and milder means could not prevent people from further harassment. It should also be remembered that dolphins are predators and, despite all their intelligence, have a very strong hunting instinct.
